What CustodyZero is
CustodyZero builds local-first instruments. On your hardware. Under your rules. Out of everyone else’s hands.
The industry built useful technology on top of a bad trade: capability in exchange for data. Smart-home hubs work — and send your footage upstream. AI agents coordinate — and no one knows exactly how. Smart devices learn your patterns — and so does every company behind them.
CustodyZero’s answer is that the trade is not necessary. Capability and custody are not in conflict. Every instrument we ship runs on the operator’s hardware, under the operator’s rules, with no required cloud dependency for functionality.
We build instruments, not platforms. You buy it. It is yours. It does not stop working.
What we build
Three instruments, each at a different phase:
- Type — a local-first writing instrument with contextual intelligence for long-form work. The editor reads with you, not for you. Alpha testing.
- Valet — an always-on assistant that runs on your hardware. Learns you over time; memory lives in the cloud storage you already use (Drive, iCloud, OneDrive) or on your local disk; unmetered, nothing leaves your computer. In development.
- StationZero — edge-native home safety. Reads what’s happening at home and knows whether to stay quiet, notify, or escalate to emergency. The intelligence runs on hardware you own. Design and validation.
Open-source tooling we built and use ourselves — Factory, the change-control system — lives on /open-source/.
The constraint
Authority belongs to the operator. Not to the vendor.
This is not a feature. It is not a differentiator. It is a constraint on everything we build, everything we say, and everything we ship. Read the full philosophy.
